President of Kanazawa University

Takashi Wada

Kanazawa university has been selected for the 2024 "MULTICULTURAL CAMPUS PROJECT TOWARD SOCIAL IMPACT " Type I (regional collaboration type).
This project was launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT) in 2024. This year, 10 universities, including our university, were selected for Type I.
This project has three main objectives.
The first is to establish a system for international co-learning both domestically and internationally through collaboration with the local communities in which the universities conduct educational and research activities.
The second is to promote the dispatch of Japanese students overseas and to accept and retain excellent international students.
The third is to create a virtuous cycle in which the two aforementioned initiatives interact with each other, promoting further internationalization of the university and the realization of a multicultural society, leading to the creation of "Social Impact" beyond proposals for solving problems both domestically and internationally and their social implementation.

In 2014, Kanazawa University was selected for the Top Global University Project which provides focused support to universities that are leading the way in internationalization. Since then, this project had been undertaken across Kanazawa University for approximately 10 years.
In 2022, the university formulated the Future Vision of Kanazawa University, “Kokorozashi”(aspirations), making clear its emphasis on two perspectives: local and global. By integrating these two concepts back and forth, we aim to contribute to society through "Future oriented Intelligence" to explore and overcome future challenges.
We believe that this project "MULTICULTURAL CAMPUS PROJECT TOWARD SOCIAL IMPACT " will serve as the booster that will drive further university reform, building on our past achievements.
The type of student talent that Kanazawa University aims to develop through this project is the global talent with their rich international scope and communication skills, who can work with people from diverse backgrounds to tackle social issues and create new value.
We will work to create″Global Innovation Campus″where students of various nationalities can learn together, tackle local and international issues, and constantly create new value through "Future oriented Intelligence", and to nurture and produce Kanazawa University brand talent that will lead the next generation.

Over the six-year project period, Kanazawa University will work hard for further reform toward thorough internationalization, with the aim of creating a campus where internationalization is a part of everyday life.
We would appreciate your support and cooperation in our efforts regarding this project.

To realize the ″Global Innovation Campus″, Kanazawa University will implement integrated educational reforms from pre-admission to graduation/completion through this project. This initiative consists of three key elements.

Leading the internationalization of the Entire Hokuriku Region

Through this project, Kanazawa University will act as a powerful driving force for the internationalization of the entire Hokuriku region by collaborating with various sectors.
Kanazawa University will accept students from around the world through collaboration with partner universities, overseas offices, and overseas alumni associations, and accelerate multicultural collaborative learning between international and Japanese students. Based on this, we will collaborate with the following three sectors:

  • We will disseminate know-how of multicultural collaborative learning through collaboration with higher education institutions in Ishikawa Prefecture.
  • We will promote initiatives aimed at retaining human resources through collaboration with industries in the Hokuriku region, such as internships designed to help individuals settle in the region.
  • We will support international students and their families in living comfortably by providing Japanese language learning support and comprehensive settlement assistance through interactions with the local community. We will promote the realization of a multicultural society into the city through collaboration and cooperation with local communities and local governments.
3

Enhancing the Environment for Accepting International Students

Strategic expansion of international networks

We will further promote accepting outstanding international students by expanding partner universities, overseas offices, and alumni networks.
Furthermore, we will strengthen collaboration with overseas high schools and technical colleges, and deepen collaboration with companies by building a tripartite partnership companies, universities, and overseas universities.

Initiatives for accepting diverse human resources

  • We will advance recruitment reforms to attract outstanding students starting from high school age.
  • We will implement entrance exams that do not require travel to Japan or Japanese language proficiency, and provide pre-arrival Japanese language training for successful candidates utilizing overseas offices.
  • We will design programs that comprehensively highlight Kanazawa's allure as center of academic excellence, cultural richness and tourism.
4

Support for Building Diverse Career Paths

Strategic expansion of international networks

We support the development of diverse career paths for students after graduation/completion.

  • Enhanced Regional Settlement Support for International Students in Collaboration with the local community.

The ″Link KAGAYAKI″ International Student Employment Promotion Program, including its predecessor organizations, has been supporting the regional integration of international students since 2017. We will further enhance this system in the future.
Furthermore, ″the Hokuriku Open Platform for Co-creating the Future″, established in 2021, promotes the regional integration of internationally competitive international students.

  • We will expand the system that enables international alumni to act as "“Liaison Personnel"” through partner universities and alumni associations after returning to their home countries.
